    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Cheers for replies. Is the point of pva here to limit the suction or create a bond? Only I find that pva dies nice and slowly and sticky on plaster and paint, but on bonding or s&c it seems to just soak in without getting tacky. Make sense?

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Hi, Can i resurrect this post again please? I've been filling the holes where the old skim fell off. Did this with bonding and then keyed it up ready. It's obviously dried quick because the holes weren't deep. Having put a feather edge on the wall, i've noticed it runs out at the far end and...

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Cheers for all the comments. I'll stick to bonding it straight and then skim. The bonding will stick to anything, and as long as I PVA right, the skim would be stuck hard to the wall. :RpS_drool:

Thanks for all the replies. Always guaranteed a decent number on this forum! Feel better tackling it now. I'll go the PVA route and forget the WBA. If i remember i'll post some pictures so you can all have a laugh.

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

I skimmed the wall. I'm not too bad, just need pointers when it comes to slightly not so straight forwards things. The skim that's on there is solid as a rock, hence why I don't want to pull it all off. Cheers again.

Will do, have been removing tile adhesive (well, the large bits, impossible to get rid of it all) and loose skim as I go. Yes, tiling myself. Thanks all again.

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Cool, that sounds like a plan then... I usually use PVA 5:1 first and then 3:1 on the second coat (purely because that's what it says on the back of the tin). So, would I be right in doing the following: 1) PVA 5:1 the whole wall, and fill in the large holes with bonding when tacky 2) key up...

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Cheers for the quick replies! No to backer boards, have ruled that out. Good idea though. Can you put bonding on 1-2mm thick? Also, do you pva, let dry, then bond, then pva again and skim when tacky? I need an idiots guide:RpS_blushing: Cheers again.

    Skimming this wall (piccies attached)

Hi, I've removed a load of tiles from around a bath and have been left with areas where the skim coat was pulled off the sand and cement undercoat: Bearing in mind I'm a DIYer, what's the best thing to do here? Ceramic tiles are going to be put on after so it needs to be firmly attached to...

    Bonding on plasterboard?

Worked a treat. Just let the bonding harden and start to set and then laid some multi on. Thanks for all the advice.

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Thanks for this. Really good advice. :RpS_thumbup: Any ideas for not getting the finish to be like a mirror? I'm trowelling to flatten, and use water sparingly. I guess I must be over-trowelling it, but I can't see where because I feel I need to, to get the wall flat. Touching the wall - it's...

    Bonding on plasterboard?

S'all good. I'll bond early and skim a after it's hardened the same day. If not, i'll PVA it or wet it down the following day and skim it then. Thanks for all your help.

Cheers. I'm not a plasterer, I'm a number cruncher who DIY's. Hence my asking. Cheers again though,

    Bonding on plasterboard?

Can I put bonding plaster straight onto plasterboard? I need to pack out an edge, but nothing over 3/4 inch thick though. Also, what's the score about skimming over bonding? I assume I can do it the same day but at what point? As soon as it's hard? Ta. (you know, the more I write on this...

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Cheers for all the replies. Big by my standards is probably laughable by yours: 4m long. But my problem is the speed of laying it on as it throws out everything else. But that only comes with time. I had to flatten it out before putting the second coat, otherwise like you say it would have...

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Hi. No, I don't mix both up at the same time! I'm not that stupid (well, maybe I am actually). Thanks though. Tried at it the weekend, and it was fine for small walls, but I did a big wall and had to start flattening straight off as I spent too much time laying it on :(

Skimming over paint - advice please

Hi, I have a room which is painted with a vinyl silk sort of paint directly onto plaster. Anyway, on one wall I rubbed it all down to get rid of the shine and provide a key, sugar-soaped it and washed it clean, ready to re-skim it. However, it was whilst it was wet that I noticed that the...

Beginner question - skimming top of wall near ceiling

Cheers for the replies. I must admit I like the idea of pulling down from the ceiling (kinda like the opposite of working from skirting). I assume you can't use anywhere the amount of plaster on the trowel though. So i guess doing this will get you around a foot or so down, and then you plaster...

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Cool. Would you still wait until the 1st coat has tightened up before laying the second coat on? Does it matter when you put the second coat on, ie suction, etc?

Beginner question - skimming top of wall near ceiling

Hi, another beginner’s question if I may... Being DIY and only learning from forums, online guides, etc, I’m questioning how I should lay on skim on the top part of a wall. When dealing with the rest of the wall (middle and bottom), it’s straight forward (pull trowel up and at a slight...

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Brilliant, thanks for all the help. After the 1st coat, I’ll resist the urge to flatten immediately (unless it’s started to pull in). Once it’s started to pull in, I’ll do a quick flatten, and then immediately on with the second coat. I’ll have to flatten it first because there’s no way my...

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Cheers for the answers. Always knock up two batches - got nothing else to do, cos I'm only doing one wall at a time. I will try to resist troweling straight away and let it firm up a little first. Just too tempting when you're just waiting and it looks like the chuckle brothers have plastered...

Multi-finish "tearing" when flattening immediately after second coat

Should I throw the bag away (just opened it at the weekend), or is the liklihood that they are all like this? There's no guarantee that the new bag is going to be any better I guess. What's the way around it (if there is one)? Many thanks.

Time between 1st and 2nd skim coat

Hi, Can someone give me the optimum time to start laying on the second coat of a skim? I'm not after times, because I guess it depends how long you take to put the first coat on, but should it firm up first (so to speak!)? I always wait until the plaster had gone a little, so that when you...

Multi-finish "tearing" when flattening immediately after second coat

Hi, First post. DIY plasterer, not trade. Have skimmed 20 odd walls over a couple of years as and when needed and done a few backing coats. Have what I think is a half decent finish nowadays, especially with sandpaper and easifill and not tackling large walls! Anyway, was skimming a wall...
