I am an ex soldier mate. I used the pitiful re settlement that i got towards and intensive 6 week course, I already had a spread lined up to work for when I started. I dont think I would have done it otherwise. It was a big finantial risk but I had a few quid in the bank from being away so much...
How is it you can only afford to pay him £25 quid? He is commited and will be learning fast.
"So you think i'm wrong in give the boy my time my experience?" He is giving you 8 hours a day, making you money, there is no way you are "giving" him half of that.
Dont get me wrong, its good you...
It wont take a fairly intellegent lad long on that money to start feeling used. They will have a good idea what kind of money your on. They will be rubbing their hands together dreaming of the day they can ditch you, and earn five times as much as they were earning and still undercut you!
I dont think I could sleep at night paying another human being £25 a day. Is it any wonder young lads either give up or do the minimum time then move on? If they are any good they are going to be grafting all day resenting you. Paying someone what you got paid when you were an apprentice in...
doing a loft conversion a while back needed a 1m bit of stop bead, had a ratch about in the van (no joy). Decided to drop into a jewsons a few hundred yards away from the job (dont have a jewsons account) the guy said "no problem mate, that will be 9 quid" we laughed and said yea good one, how...
Just came across these lights in costco today, they are very bright and feel like very good quality.
I think they were around the £30 mark.

I got a wee belt when I was screwing a blank cap onto a radiator pipe a while back. Told the lady, she said thats strange we have just had the house re wired. So she phones the sparky that did the work (he arrives in ten minutes flat) he says its impossible that I got a shock as all the pipework...
Im building a house at the moment, we are aiming for a highly airtight building. The windows are hardwood. Airtight does not have to mean plastic SH*TE.
I have done some searching and the only stilts well recommended seems to be sur mags. Im not sure what model though. The only sur stilts I have found in the uk are on ebay, they are "sur s2". Does anyboby have these or tried them? I like the idea of the doublesided supports.
cheers Tom.
Me and my mate were boarding over a kitchen ceiling a couple of years ago. All the units were covered with dust sheets. I put my foot on the worktop for a bit of extra grunt with the screw driver. "crunch" , one of those gut churning moments! I pulled back the sheets to find I had put my foot...
Hi spunky, If I get a job thats more than a day or two I work with my mate who I started with, He does the same so we both mainly only do small jobs by ourselves. I dont get asked to do alot of external, occasionaly when I do get asked (if its a big job) I refer the customer to specialists in my...
Hi artisan,
I got a contribution towards the course as a part of re-settlement but covered the bulk of the cost myself. I had a few quid in the bank back then with being away quite a bit.
yea smokey I think you have the same attitude that I do. I work in quite a small town rural area so I...

I just recently joined the forum to research speedskim/s*p*r*lex spats and came across your thread. I have been through a six week course. I left the forces 7 years ago, worked for a builder/ laboured for a plasterer for six months and wanted to get into the...
