Developers want everything cheap here too. Building land is perhaps more expensive in consideration to other areas.

Developers want everything cheap no matter where you are, but the fact is prices are defined firstly by location.

£2 £3£4 a metre ...depending where you live in the country you can make a decent living.........but contracting is where the money is.

Pisses me off a bit when people advertise work for others and nobheads just want to moan about it. If ur not happy then move on to another thread don't bitch

You got a point.
We as spreads will moan about s**t pay but most are happy to work for it so we only have ourselves to blame!
People can't say how crap it is and then go and work for those rates.
There's a few that will not do it, unfortunately those few are a hell of a lot less than the ones that will.

I honestly struggle not to be paying 40% tax whilst working my bollox off with a couple of lads on PAYE and good seasoned subbys, I tend to share when we do well. Those who produce no hassle work get paid promptly and on time regardless. Awful lot of not very good plastering contractors out there in their 4 wheel drives gonna go bust. In this business for 34 years, been f**k*d over a few times but on the whole I feel it's worth it.

Agreed but logic dictates that not everyone or even the majority of us can be the contractor

Are you a sub contractor or a subbie to a subbie trying to make a bit more from skimming off the rates? Not a dig or an argument starter just asking?

I think the sites we end up on we could earn money on 3£ a meter if they got the whole plot ready by the time they want us starting the plot. But they haven't and normally it's like after 2 wasted visits. That's why we charge 4.50 now. If not let's have a bit of day rate. Cuppa tea any one???

I never start a plot until it's ALL ready, pointless otherwise

It's amazing the difference with builders as regards pricework and charging by the day. Some builders don't give a Fcuk about you when a price is agreed and would drive you mad when your trying to get the job done.Charge them by the day in certain circumstances and you'd swear the've just returned from Lourdes, the transformation that has come over them.

go limited, and take your income as dividends none of this higher tax rate.

its not a walk in the park being a plastering contractor either employing lads, struggling to get paid of the principal contractor etc, you need to have a bit about you, and a few quid put away. been there done that. no more hasstle now as its not my world any more, but I still have the four wheel drive.
