I wish you all the luck in the world bud I was the first to say that your website looks great and I also know without a shadow of a doubt that you will and are making a success.

But yeah to me a builder is still am old skool bricklayer firstly.

Most good builder pairings is 1 bricklayer and 1 joiner. They take full ownership from footings to roof.

The only normal exception for them then is to get an electrician, plumber & sometimes a plasterer some times not depending on if bricky was taught it under trowel skills.

But alas chaps at some points even when it's really getting to you there are moments that give you hope again I had 6 customers on bounce sweet as paid what it was worth happy with job and paid up on completion then hit 2 bad ones and sent me back into hating this game so it's how you approach each job I suppose,I ain't been on here long but reading through old threads and the comments I see you can work out who actually knows there stuff and has a sense of humour to the ones who ain't got a clue and play at being a plasterer at 32 years old I been on my own for over a year and still learning now and quotes I've put in I thought was tight only to be undercut by 50% it used to eat me up thinking how can they earn at that price but now I rely on my quality not quantity also we talking about builders I've never met one yet who doesn't say he can get it cheaper I had it before and I ended up going back to put the cheap blokes work right felt smug after that job I tell thee

Tbf I think I'm the only plasterer in the whole world that can't even foookin tile!!!

So really know one should pay a blind bit of notice to me!!! Lol

I can't tile either and I'm pretty crap at painting as well for all we have to do in our job I get half way across cutting in and wanna give up :llorando:

so if I was going to become a builder would I have to invest in a lumberjack fleece top have ideas that clearly won't work and want my plastering done for next to nothing cos you know back in the day I done a bit for a old spread

Hahahah has it got the * bit then underneath says that? Was that just practice before you start taking on more tiling?
Reading all this thread I think f**k it if can't beat them join them I am going to put builderman on the van and quote up work ..get other trades in and change my job to property development executive building services.

I prefer the title "professional abode builder" a company you can trust (only been on rouge traders once)

I do most trades to a good standard but having my van signed as just a plasterer is a problem, my next van won't be signed up as a plasterer I don't think. Like what's been said you can be on a job for a month doing everything rather than a couple of days skimming it. Sick of seeing tossers playing as builders collecting deposits then screwing every trade down or getting jokers in and robbing the customer. I find most of the good builders I know have been joiners.

Im trying to get into everything rather than just plastering. Working with a mate of mine who's a very good all rounder. Kitchen fitter by trade. Weve recently completed a garage conversion from ripping the door off to painting including replacing a flat roof with a tiled roof. Really enjoyed it and it was less than a weeks boarding and skimming. Weve just finished a bathroom refurb and start a full kitchen project on friday.

In between all these jobs weve fitted windows and doors, moved a boiler (signed off by a registered engineer) slabbing etc. Really enjoying work at the moment. Could already do most of it but having to learn about the electrics and plumbing as i hadnt a clue.

Good fun isn't it. Couldn't be skimming all day every day. 5-6 days on the bounce is well enough for me. I'm stitch drilling out a 6 inch block wall and making it into a new door way in a factory today. Acrows strong boys new lintel slate pack tomorrow fit frame and then make good around lintel.

I'm screaming out for variety. Inside work has become 95% skimming for me. Builders and joiners grab all the boarding and floating isn't wanted. The only change I get is render in the summer months :berrinche:

Not to mention the extra money you can make. We're makng a grand just for supplying the kitchen. Its my mates firm that makes
them. Customers still getting better quality kitchen for a fraction of the cost of b and q

Necessity and house bashing has led to variety of work , don't wear the body out the same either or I'm fukked all over now instead of selective places.
But this week I've studded boarded insulated and skimmed one wall ,knocked a kitchen out plus walls to create open plan, removed flood damaged doors frames and architraves (in process of refitting) .
Today I'm spreading hopefully one big mix n out.
Then next week fit window in bathroom I can then complete said bathroom ,paint a bedroom where put insulated wall and then back finish the doors.
I like what I do and the variety and moving about , I leave a good job clients are happy and I get paid. Oh yeah and the suns out .:descansando:

Jesus this is depressing me I literally do nothing but PVA and skim all day every day....keep trying to push more render but then reliant on other people and the weather....both of which are a pain in the ass to predict on any given day....

I don't get it though surley if you advertise as a plasterer you look like a chancer doing all the other bits?

I think if I was doing what you lot are doing I would feel that I'd have to advertise as a builder...

I see these property maintenance style handyman vans and just think so come on then what are you by trade yer tossa...

But yeah I'm under no illusions that you will defo make more money and much easier money doing other things...

I wonder how builders feel about these sort of people that are springing up@Amigo etc????

I could not agree more

It's how your set up.

We have been slow for a few months now which I don't mind as rendering is coming in.

But slow weeks still turn over £6-700 easily enough to take home £300 - £350 for a few days work

Up in Sheffield I'll take that

Me? I've no problem at all with it tbh.

If people want to earn a living/more money by expanding what they do then good for them. Most tradesmen can pick up other trades and aspects of their own trade fairly quickly. They all demand basic hand skills, and if you've developed them in one trade they can be applied to another. The knowledge aspect of each trade can be learned over time. As long as people stick to their limits as they go, those limits will increase naturally over time.

Competition has never bothered me, I'm good at what I do. (y)

Never had an issue with guys getting on as long as they leave a good job, would nt bother me if the postman was painting a wall I had done as long as he did it well. Having said that I like to paint my own work a bad painter can make yer work look shoite. If your work is good there is no reason on gods green earth that you can only be good at that.
Good guys can generally turn there hand to most with a good finish , just some stick to what they know and that's fine but it's ok to branch out under the wing of others to guide. How it's been all my life and when times have been hard I have been glad of the time taken by good guys to show and help me out to have the knowledge and confidence to work on and run my jobs leaving a good finish and happy clients. Is all that matters along with your pride and well being.

Appears we were scribbling at the same time :estudioso: completely agree.:birras:

Am good at sleeping in. Drinking. Boxing. f**k**g. I have a happy life. There is no money in work. Manual labour is G**.

You do rendering?

Yes & no.... Was doing smaller sand & cement with another spread up until last yr but sadly he is now in terminal bad health...

Used to just pass rendering over in the main as my work contract commitments previousley used to tie me up for 90% of each month just leaving the odd day free.

I packed up all my contract work last summer after 10 yrs of demanding schedules & stress and having to sub work out all the time after having to have 3mnths off the tools due to my own health issues at that time.

I'm just starting to get myself back together now and at present just concentrating on small domestic work on my own without the need to have to start subbing work out again.

Have a good friend that is quite big with ewi work & thincoats and have been shown the ropes on these.

I'm wanting to try and push silicone thin coat work as a lot easier to do on your own than sand & cement and in the main apart from gables I'm thinking you can do 90% of it on your own and then just pay someone to help topcoat it.

I've not touched mono and it doesn't apeal to me at this moment in time as again I'd be relient on other spreads and machines.

At moment I've done a handful of smaller 1.5mm silicone jobs and really enjoy the work and i just buy the gear off my mate that's accredited to supply end users ewi works and just have 1 of his lads help top them for me.

This will be my first year I will be able to broadern my work horizan to be honest with out being tied down hopefully going to try and get on a couple of thin coat manufacturer courses so that I can eventually buy and supply my own materials and warranties and see where it goes!

Oh and I'm a Capricorn!

@zombie what do you mean what will the builders think? Lol builder is not a trade its just a term used by Cowboys and s**t tradesmen most of the time. It is quite hard to get all the other work advertising as a plasterer but tell them you have other tradesmen available then do it yourself ;)
