Apprenticeship with a rogue plasterer

Hi
This is my first post on the forum, but wondering if anyone had some advice. It's taken me a year to find an apprenticeship to do plastering. I have been with this bloke for about 2 months however his plastering is not great. There is always blemishes and misses in the plaster.
I would say I am at the same level of plastering as he is, however I don't seem to be improving, because he always says I finish it well enough for a painter to get over with a bit of filler. Which makes me question everything that he has taught me so far.
Has anyone go any tips on how to leave a silky smooth finish, that wouldn't require any filling.

Wow run for the hills! A plasterer shud never say that, that is rough as FCK fair enough we all miss the odd bit here and there but to actually start a gage with that mind-set there's only 1 way ur going at that's to being rough like him try find another firm..pity ur not Leeds as we wud teach u rite I've got ocd wen it cum to nice clean sharp angles etc..is it just skimming that he's rough at? U won't be at same standard as him he's just probably past caring..we 1st coat then get our lines out then top coat let it pull in abit then flatten with a tiny bit of water then trowel with lots of water then final trowel with water brushed onto ur trowel wen its nearly gone then maybe walk the doggy dog on it if needs be this shud leave u with a nice finish but its all about timing CNT teach by writing down the method

He always does the last trowel with a float and leaves it with the float marks in. Surely if you use a float you use your finishing trowel after?
He tries blagging me like he does with the customer, but the finish I expect is completely different to the one that is achieved.
By no means am I saying I'm a plasterer, but I do feel like I am at the same level as he is after 2 months. I kinda feel embarrassed to be associated with him.

Talk to the college or training company that your working with they will try and get you another apprenticeship mate and good luck. By the way get away from him asap

Now you know where you stand at the moment. Try always to leave better finish every time . You should see some progress very soon, if you think you can do better than him. No big drama tho, maybe he is fed up now and knows very well what can pass the radar and what not, which comes with experience . Whatever you say I think you still can learn something from him!

I try to leave hollows where they will be putting pictures up if its being papered I use a tilers trowel and tell them it's extra grip for paper [emoji106]

If you have no respect for you boss, you may as well pack in now.

Me and my former trainer were at each other's throats at times, had differing opinions, but I always respected him and more so his work.

My first few jobs on my own I was still working to his strict rules and high quality finish which I took the through my whole career.

His working methods, organisation skills, cleanliness, approach to jobs I use today as it's what I was taught and I haven't worked with them for near 10 years
