Is this ceiling worth saving?

We are buying this house. It has a really ugly drop down ceiling, which is hiding an equally ugly plastered ceiling. Can it be saved? Can I do it myself? Just learning about this stuff, thanks, John.

Funny enough I went to look at a job a few years back in Telford and the guy had his kitchen ceiling fitted with lay in grid, it's beyond me why anyone would put that up in a house????

I have seen loads of old victorian terraced houses with suspended ceilings and also made good money putting them into terraced victorian houses in the 80's and yes they are sheite but i didn't have to live with them so happy days :)
 
Hi John. Thanks for your post. Yes, the ceiling can easily be saved. Your best bet is to get a few quotes from reputable plasterers in your area. To tackle it yourself would be a real ballache and you would never be happy with the result, always averting your gaze when entering the room etc. The time it would take you to attempt it you could be working and pay a professional plasterer to do it for you.
 
Thanks, don't think I'll attempt it after your advice! Don't want to get a ballache! Thought about having a sheet rocker do it, but then it wouldn't match the rest of the house. The whole kitchen the previous owner's installed is ugly enough, I can concentrate on that. The rest of the house is pretty classy...
