I'm starting a course at gold trowel next month and need to get into work as quick as possible, before that I need tools. To buy tools I need money, so how much should I try and save to get myself a Half decent set of tools??

Difficult question I know

it will take at least 3 years before you can earn any money. that is why it is best to serve an apprenticeship as soon as you leave school and still have the support of your parents.
they cannot teach anyone much in a few weeks, flog you a few tools and tell you to phone up local plasterers on the hope that they will teach you after they have taken your money.

Many tools and gadgets you can buy but keep it simple to start off with, get yourself a good trowel that you feel comfortable holding, you may be best to find a supplier and go in and pick a few up to see if you like them, sizes vary but I wouldn't go above 14" to start with maybe go for a pre worn or a permashape as they have a slight curve to the blade which will help to stop you getting lines when laying on and flattening.with a paddle mixer you could spend a fortune but there are some decent little mixers about that won't break the bank,I have an evolution mixer as a spare that is actually pretty good,it will mix one and two bag mixes quite happily and only cost about a hundred quid.when you buy a corner trowel just be aware that they come in 90 degrees and 103 degrees you will wan the 90. Good luck with your course and try and get on with a plasterer after to further improve your skills.:)

Thanks for some positive comments kgreigh, that's why I started this chat to get some helpful comments.
Malc I'm 21 finished school 5 years ago, I already said I'm starting a course so thanks for putting a downer on it, and making me feel like I'm wasting my time! I'm doing this course to change my job, make a better living, and make my life better, and it's wankers like you that stop people from doing that!! Rant over

I've been in the building game a few years, nothing is easy in life, but if you want it that much then you'll get it. I'm trying to make my life better and as plasterers you should be congratulating me on that and wanting me to do it, so that you do have a new age of plasterers.

Your right when you say about wanting something and getting it, your not so right on being congratulated by plasterers for wanting to become there competition.
Think about it, your asking to be taught by someone to then potentially be another plasterer that prices for the same job!
The course won't be a complete waste of time I'm sure you'll learn the very basics, then you want to further your skills which will take some time. The best thing to do is when asking for work say you have done a short course and you want to gain experience and learn more while being a labourer.
I don't think most time served spreads like it when people do a course and then say you're a plasterer who's looking for work! It gets there eyes rolling.
You need to be willing to labour while learning how to plaster. That's the way forward. If you just expect to learn how to plaster that won't happen as you won't make anyone money that way. Remember it's got to benefit the person you work for or what's the point in them having you?
Good luck with your career and if you put the time and effort in to become good you'll get there a lot quicker!

How long is the course?
My old man sent me on a short course when I 1st started with him, think he wanted to check I was serious before he spent any time on me! It wasn't a complete waste of time or money. But you only got the very basics. They might be better now, mine was nearly 15yrs ago. Might also give you an idea if you really see yourself doing it or not?
This is such a varied trade, with so many different skills in the mix.
My advice would be to find a plasterer to work with as soon as poss. Help you make the most of what you learn, and improve your knowledge. Otherwise you could end up paying out for the course and wasting your time and money. Which would be a shame. Someone will give you a break, let us know how you got on.
As said already basic tool should cover you to start with. If the plaster doesn't!!
Once again good luck!

@Plaster-scene you will get stick because of the course but just take it all on the chin, keep keen and plugging away, take all the advice, every spread I work/worked with does it slightly different so just be a sponge (no pun intended sponge lovers) and soak it all up. It takes along time and graft to be on the tools and to earn the trust, don't get despondent if u f**k up even if u get screamed at, we all make mistakes. But remember after afew years, don't get all cocky and thinking you know better, some people do because the old school and proper spreads do know more than u, what they've forgotten ain't worth knowing, it's all about respect and learning. May the force be with you..... [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Good luck fella.
Start with a gang as a labourer with a little knowledge, learn the materials inside out then start flapping when you finally do bang some on. You'll get their after a few years but endure the abuse and head down and graft. It's hard but banter is a1 and after 10 years plus when your half decent you'll be fecked.
2.20 a meter so I hear?
