Afternoon all

first off nice forum and after nosing around I thought I'd register to ask a few questions

first off I'm 35 years and looking at changing career into plastering but I've a few questions.

uve seen lots of courses advertised as "able to immediately walk into a plastering job" these provide gnvqs , btecs and such but what I really want to find out what is the actual requirements to be able to work as a plasterer on sites (I'm aiming to do this at first before possibly branching out)

also how long should I realistically expect to train (not actual work experience) in a classroom environment before being able to site work.

finally I'm based in London so are there any London based plasterers able to let me know what the job market is like.

many thanks, and apologies for typos as I'm on my phone so not the best for long messages!

Currently london rates for plastering range from shite to about a million pound a square inch depending on who you listen to.
However if you have a look in the usual places (eve standard and its ilk), the money is average at best. With the best will in the world by the time your experienced enough and fast enough to earn a proper good days money, on a price work site, your best days will be if not behind you then certainly running out.
There are hundreds of multi trade jobs with council/housing associations just do 2 or 3 short courses, plastering tiling and Carpentry or a bit of plastic plumbing and your laughing.

My mate does that time served tiler who can plaster and plumb,,, £12 @ hr and they pay the painters 10.50!

it will take anyone at least 3 years experience before you can earn a wage.
the other problem is no one under 40 can plaster and at 40 you are to old!

the quote no one can plaster who is under 40 and at 40 you are to old. was what we where told when we where young by the older plasterers.

hi monkey, their are easier more lucrative careers that you could change to at 35 imo,
but if your determined then you could try and get on with a plasterer local to you and you would get a good insight as to
what the trade is all about, not sure about the courses you mentioned as ive not been on one and dont know anyone who has but i suppose it would depend on your own dexterity,
i would be wary of any course that will guarantee you a job and an nvq as an nvq can only be obtained through work based exp etc.. (as far as im aware)
im not trying to be negative but ive had lads that wanted to learn to plaster, work with me an they have sacked themselves at dinner time cos its hard graft,
all the best with whatever you decide to do and let us know how you get on. melon
