Hi All new to this forum just joined so Hello to everyone..!!!

Im looking for some advice on taking a plastering course, I'm looking at a career change and plastering is the route I'm wonting to take ...
i live in South Yorkshire and work full time and also have a family so that rules out the traditional collage and apprentice route.
Ive been looking around at different courses Gold Trowel looks good but to far to travel from where i am , I've seen a company called YTA who do a 10 day full CITB course, are these courses any good ??
I don't want to waste my money and have nothing to show at the end of it, i realise after the 10 days I'm not going to be a master plaster, i know you can't buy experience but after the course what should i expect ?? Is it reasonable to say id be competent to go into someones house and do plastering jobs for them. ideally i would want to start my own business plastering and go on from there ?? Are theses courses a good route to take or just a bit of a con???

Thanks for taking time out to read this and all advice would be much appreciated !!

Cheers Lee

Hey lee welcome =) 10 days to become a plasterer? Not gonna happen mate in sorry to say.. they aint worth a toss in my opinion, you wont be able to make a career off of one of those courses... i took a kid on about 18 months ago that did one in 2 weeks and his quick course was longer than his plastering career... literally had to finish him after a week he was oblivious to things that every plasterer should know.. couldnt stagger boards, didnt know about backing plasters, low and high suction backgrounds... was a righty going from right to left on skims... he probably learned more in the week i had him than on the course.... its not a quick process... ✌

:RpS_lol:

There no right or wrong end result all that matters!:RpS_thumbsup: But you can only drift into your own way of thinking by being trained correctly

Thanks for the replies will have a look at guides for master crafts man ..!! My plan was to do the course and get experience doing small jobs at weekends for family etc until confident enough to start doing it properly .. I'm in a decent paid job at mo so can't just give it up ... Speaking to the guy at YTA he reks I'll learn enough to start ( but suppose he gonna say that.!! ) has anyone on here trained at YTA ..??

Hi, did you end up doing the yta training course?

Yorkshire Tiling Academy are good guys. They've been doing it a while.

The thing is with trades that aren't governed (like Part-P Electrical and Heating Engineers with Gas Safe are), there are only so many ways to get into the trade.

College, Short Course, or Trained-on-the-job - They all risk throwing out rubbish tradesmen. But there are some, and we'll all know some from each avenue, that are very good at their job.

I know a few plasterers that haven't had any formal training at all. So for somebody who's changing career later in life who can't do college, what options do they have?

Doing a course and starting off with small jobs, teaming up when possible with existing teams, doing friends and family first, iron out the problems and get quicker. And then when every new type of issue occurs down the line in the future, as long as they don't kid themselves or their customers and just wing it, and do some further training (perhaps with a manufacturer) or get somebody experienced in a flank them, then it can be a very good way to get into a trade. IMO anyway.

But even a guy who's been doing it 20 years will come across an issue from time to time I guess.

So nobody knows it all. :)
