Hi all, New on here!
Am 42 and looking for a career change soon whilst facing probable redundancy in 2-3 years and looking towards self employment eventually as Plasterer/ Tilling etc. with other skills usefull in the industry.
Currently work full time night shift with long weekends available and daytimes.
Any advice or comments about The DiySchool at Stockport? have very flexible courses to do weekends which suit and are they a good start? look good.
Thanks all.

Do something else no offence but at 42 plastering is not the way forward for u its a young lads game the older guys have the Experience to make life easier for themselves something u can't learn on a coarse

Exactly that ^^ :RpS_thumbup:

Thanks, i can understand the comments..
No site will take on older people, and would only be interested in young uns on the min wage and apprentices they can abuse, where as us more experienced people would tell em where to go! was only looking at self employed and private work, and not just plastering.
But when faced with having to do something else i guess what ever trade or new skills you choose, everyone will say don`t bother!
I would say the same now to anyone taking up what i do? but think different after 25 years like i am sure most plasterers do after 25 years!
But you have to give something ago when faced with having to change!
Not everyone has the fortune at taking on a trade/skill at 16 that is a job for life and sometimes we are forced to change career.
But i can fully appreciate where you are coming from guys and know nothing is easy!
I have always appreciated plastering as a unique special skill and admired any plasterer and their workmanship!
Thats what appeals to me, knowing it will be hard and challenging but rewarding in the end.
I am currently an engineer and use my hands, have no interest in an office job or been a driver sitting on my arse getting fat!
Thanks again.

Good luck to you mate but like the others say 42 is a bit late to start plastering, im 34 now + feel about 44 after some days, it aint easy work!

Hi Andy, don't waste your time and money on this course its 4 days! you will not learn to be a plasterer in 4 days. your best bet is to approach a local builder / plastering contractor and offer to work as a labourer for minimum wage or less. Explain what your intentions are and be willing to take on any hours, type of work. That way you will learn how to mix plaster, (not as straight forward as you think) the different types of plaster etc. and also learn the correct way to plaster. Then after you have gained the experience required you can apply for an NVQ vir onsite assessments. (funded) You need to have a recognised qualification now to get on to all building sites. (CSCS Card)
Best of luck
Bryan (plastering assessor)

he was until it got took over by re***ds mate and turned it into a joke, no skin off my nose, shame for those interested tho..

I learnt to swim from this. I think there's one for tiling too.

Larry LOVES swimming, Herbie like it aswell ?. Not in a fully tiled swimming pool obviously, in a lake
He loves it. Was on Crantock the other evening.

Been to the vets today though cos he's split one of his claws. No swimming for a week or two until it's healed. Mapei Gum

75 next birthday you old nursing home legend

Im in my 40's and wouldn't be doing this anymore only for the loadsa money aspect.
I cant work sites as im too slow, decent weeks work and im broken , no more bouncing to the pub for 20 pints on the Friday , i lie on the sofa and am stiff like a 90 year old when i need to get up!
If i didnt have the skill set and experience i would be kicked under the spot board and pure done, game over.
Young mans game if you want to make money , take you years mate to be any use at all.
Private domestic is where i ply my trade now and you need loads of experience , your not hitting flat walls.
Can be hard enough , every trowel was a different thickness today , without experience you wouldnt be able to do it and your head be wrecked.
Plus you need to know how to price the jobs right and understand each different client.
Good luck with it but id be looking at something else
