Hi again. Do any of you fellas know anything about SIPS I am going to build an extension at the back of the house like a knock through going into a 6m x 4m kitchen diner with a flat roff. I want it up quick and was thinking about SIPS but when I have read up on them they seem to need two skins. But I have come across Super SIPS that say they only need one which wold be great. And they can be used for the roof as well. Looking at normal SIPS they seem to work out about the same price but are much quicker and more thermally efficient. Has anyone built with them or know much about them? Pros and Cons would be much appreciated. Thanks lads:RpS_thumbup:

Excuse my ignorance Bobbyz :-/

If you ask me and I imagine most spreads brick and block all the way..

Timber frame IMO just won't last half as long especially if it's costs a similar amount that you just save on time..

Is your house rendered?

It is dashed Spanky. It's not like it's a garden shed or something made out of balsa wood. They have really good reviews and all the certificates from BBA etc. But I see your point in a way most people might think that but I spoke with an estate agent yesterday and he said it makes no difference to resale costs etc it will just add the same value as bricks and mortar.

I wonder if that's true, is it standard construction or non standard ,

I think they are standard construction. I saw them on the new Sarah Beeny show a few weeks ago and that is why I started looking into them. Here is the link of the page. It is one of many SIPS sites but SuperSips can just have one skin they meet aand go past all building regs more so than bricks and mortar they are used in scandivaia etc and the states

Well yeah then maybe I would be tempted with the existing building already dashed.

I'm doing some timber frame houses now with stone external skin £250k they will be sold for!!

I would never buy a timber frame house.

Would be interesting to know how long they expect them to last?

Hi Bobby

I work with a lot of the UK based SIP manufacturers. If they are BBA approved and registered with the STA they are all good quailty and legit companies.

Have a look at this and read through - make some calls to some of the companies (mention that Richard Lord from Knauf put you onto them) - SIPS - UKSIPS Merge Structural Timber Association

If I ever build my own house - SIP's or Timber Frame will be the preferred choice (SIPs are faster and more airtight....). SIPs can be build for walls and roofs and give a great fast and airtight building, and are suitable for use as an extension - make sure you get some quality designs from the supplier before they start!

If you want some more assistance, give me a call to discuss further (I am on holiday at the moment, but back Monday 8th Sept) - my details are in my profile (click my name in this post, then click my profile, you will find my contact details in there)

Good Luck!

Richard

johns right. they might pass all the building regs etc and be more thermally efficient and quicker to build but its what prospective buyers of your house in the future will feel and more importantly how mortgage lenders view it. you may only get 60 LTV on the property for example. maybe not, i dont know, but they are the questions to ask.

i worked for a bloke last year who'd built an office with SIPS in his garden and it was fantastic, like a really modern chalet. he said they put it together in two days. it turned up on the back of a wagon and the lifted it over the top of the house into the garden with a crane

Some banks are not lending on timber frames pre 85ish and only 60% on ones built 85 to 92ish

they sound the tits. i'd use them for an extension if they were readily accepted by lenders. will have to look into it

They are.
we used sips roof panels 10 years ago, used extensively in off-site / pod construction. If I can dig out the pics ill put them up

Yeah holidays are far too expensive.
And marra? Your northern side coming out there.

Were all good. Nothing heard from austins. So no bigguns on the go.

I have heard that we have lost the board supply on that job as well.....

The site manager (the guy with the voice) is really pissed off with the QS and Directors (saving pennies on mats but paying more elsewhere and later) - he wanted to use Aqu Ext as the first phase had a massive failure.

Oh well.... omward and upwards!
