Would a render carrier board and a thin coat system not be a better option ??

Hello mate

If you need a sand and cement finish, then as you have proposed is the traditional route to go down....

If you want a modern alternative, that will give a stronger and less likely to crack route, have a look at the link in my signature below....

If you want more assistance or advise, drop me a message on here.... (my work contact details are in my profile - click on my profile name top left and then view profile), but I am on holiday sunning myself this week.... lol

Good Luck

Every job, even jobs I have done myself seems to crack when rendering over Eml when fixed to timber.whenever I work for builder I explain to problems that will most probably happen, although they don't seem to listen.
Would the Eml route be more costly than carrier board option?

EML will be more expensive, use the carrier board option with a thin coat system every timeevery time

Thanks for reply scratched it today wired felling laying on something flexible but took well didn't have room for carrier board as architect wanted breather gap with that as we'll anyone know idea behind gap cheers

The gap is for breathability just in case of interstitial condensation...bet your sorry you asked....the NHBC require it for new build onto timber frame and the LABC check it as well

When fixing EML most people just nail into the battens and don't bother using tie wire to join sheets together. Also rarely see people overlapping EML a decent amount.
