Harling coat, hydraulic lime? onto stonework? equalises suction and provides key before hydraulic lime scratch coat, I've only used it pre bagged, but I believe a 3-1 hydraulic mortar nhl 3.5 mixed wet is the same. Use a harling trowel same as you would pebble dashing you need to use force the mortar needs to slap hard against the wall and get in all the joints etc you can also harl the same mix for a top coat. Make sure you wear eye protection, protect windows and have the floor protection down!

harling is what they call wetdash in Scotland.. Ive done a fair bit up Aberdeenshire for Historic Scotland.. if you still need to know the method, let me know pal.. but its basically 1. scratch coat.2. render coat, and whilst it is nearly set, the wet dash is thrown ( harled ) on for the finish... you can add colourants etc to the finish dash.. its way more weather resistant the dry dash... used on castles, and historic buildings,,,

if thats what your on about, its roughcasting down here pal... scots do call pebbledashing harling aswell...

Yeah youre right. We call any sort of roughcast harling, either a wet harl or a dry harl. Your right about it being messy aswell, im currently doing a 7 bedroom house wet harl, ive got a full face mask, paper overalls, hat and gloves. still come home covered in it haha
