Hi been pricing a mono job on a house. There's a lot of breaks around the house so I don't think it'll need any expansion joints in but the guy asked me about it and I was pretty vague with the answer.

Am I right in saying anything over 9meters with un re enforced block work will need an expansion gap in it. I know if they want an expansion gap any where they should build it with one in there but want to be able to answer that question when I'm asked.

Thanks

every 6 metres re 7.5n blocks but it can vary depending on substrate, size of elevations etc.

Is there any point putting them in if the blockwork doesn't have then in?
Obviously it puts a break in the panel for the spread.
If the structure is going to crack, does it not crack through all the structure?

If there is not a joint in the block then thin coat textures are ok but as owls says, it is critical for scratch renders as they are brittle because of the lack of fibres and the thickness.

some spreads will put one in as a day joint so it breaks up the wall area

If by breaks in the house you mean corner returns and ingoes etc then that adds strength to the structure but cracks can travel around corners. Big panel areas stick em in at 6m intervals as owls says.

Also the engineer/architect can overrule joints if he can assure no stress in the build. Location and size of building also play a factor.

It does not sound like much to worry about. Maybe you could have some in the internal corners

Reactions: Iam
architects have tried to over rule me a few times saying that a break in a wall looks unsightly and my come back has always been are you going to pay me to do it again then when it cracks ? they soon back down.

you can't put an expansion beads on a wall that has no expansion joint on the blockwork, if you see a expansion joint on the blockwork you put expansion joint on the plaster/render.
