Just wondering how long it sorta took some of you to learn the trade well enough to go work on your own and did you start of just taking small easier jobs or just jump right into whatever work came in
 
when i went on my own it was mental i advertised for 6 months picked up a couple of builders, busy as fook but that was in 93 and any clown could make money then, things where so busy alot different to now it was just good timing for me
 
Hi Matt - It all depends on your skill, and how confident you feel in your own ability- most guys I know completed their apprenticeships
(3/4 years ) learning from their elders/ experienced plasterers, prior to starting up on their own
 
Everyones road is different. I did shirt course. Then worked and messed up my rental properties. Then i did anither short course then practised again. Worked more and plasrered walls that never needed plastering. Bout 3/4 yrs in started charging family then that opened up to the domestix market. Blagged my nvq on an osat for free
 
Yh I need to get in with someone to learn from but it's not easy finding anything wish I was experienced enough to try on my own but I am no where close yet
 
I'm still learning after 30+ years, learnt loads on here especially from Dave the dog :RpS_laugh::RpS_lol:
 
Matts post is so true. You dont know what u dont know if that makes sense. So many things i did wrong which could have been sorted earlier had i had an exoerienced eye behind me
 
started working along with my dad about 7 years ago, hes taking a step back now but still need to go to him for advice from time to time
 
You have an absoloute goldmine of info on here. You need to spend tens of hours rwading all the posts. Better than any college you will attend. Some lads on here really know their stuff and will share it with u for free
 
Lots of great spreads on here have learnt on this forum, some with 30 yrs experience ,proper apprenticeships etc, right attitudes and intelligence and I am glad that I helped them
 
i find the rendering info on here amazing

the skimming stuff is a laugh


and the fibrous stuff bores the crap out of me :RpS_biggrin:
 
If you guys were going to give some one a trial day for trainee labourer what would you be looking for sorry to go off track a bit
 
Ive never had the luxury of one but i feel the following could help
Keep site clean and safe
Know how to mix and when to mix up
Keep tools and buckets clean
Stay off ye mobile phone
Maybe chuck a wall on
Know how to measure cut and fix beads
Load van up for hometime

someone that dont need to be told to do something and asks for a job when hes got nothing to do
 
Someone who can get up in the morning and go more then 20mins without playing with their phone. Anything else is a bonus.

most of that stuff i struggle with :RpS_blushing:
 
Yh pretty much what I thought ive don't those sort of things before and got on ok but just working a few weeks with a friend a few years ago just wana get into it properly now
 
In Dorset / endorse it. Did you see what I did there :RpS_unsure: Best of luck to you bud, stay involved with the forum, lots of opportunities arise on here as well as great info.
 
Even if there is nothing to do. There is always something to sweep. Try to enjoy it. If you dont like it now you never will
 
1 thing I will say is the best plasterers aren't always the busiest...by that what I mean is being able to sell your self/being confident good at dealing with people face to face etc is sadly just as important as your work and never underestimate it. One of my best mates been spreading 20yrs at his peak had nearly 30 blokes working for him talks a fantastic game and pulls in loads and loads of work but **** me hes very very average at best but it doesn't matter as hes already landed the work and agreed a price!.

Likewise if your absoloutley tip top but cant string a sentence together and look people in the eye your ****** end of!!!

Because they have been taught to render by someone who was taught to render by their mate who was taught to render by their mate on site in 1986..... That's the problem with rendering, at least most plasterers are time served apprentices...maybe...
