Is there any radiators upstairs on that wall above ? Or near and pipes could be leaking ..... What on the outside is it just brickwork ? Has a lean too roof ? Garage roof ?
 
Hello,

It's an internal dividing wall off a party wall, 4"redbrick, there are no pipes leaking and there is no penetrating damp. High readings in the skirting very low readings up to 1.8m then off the scale.

If if you got a rising damp company in they would tell you that it's a failed DPC, effective rendering , up to 1.8 m high and a grand would make it disappear. Do I get a prize ?

It could be where both roofs meet, if the top of the wall has no under felt covering it then it could be entering that way.

Is it a cavity wall ?

Yes, its rising damp, there was no original dpc. A chemical dpc had been drilled, not correctly though as it didn't go through to the bed joint (the old injection method) bonding and tanking was also used on the wall pushing it up to the ceiling.

I remember the old days, cassettes and records. The rising damp would only climb 3 feet, it was a bit like a metre, only smaller

Then came the heady days of the 90's, videos, cd's and flat square TVs lol, rising damp has to be cured by injecting them damn bricks, and deep. 4 feet.

The Early 2000's were a heady time of ever increasing rising damp levels, praying that the Thames Barrier wouldn't be opened, loads of work, nearly 5 foot high


2014 now, if you can get a renderer to render it using waterproofer, I'll skim it for £20

I have found rising damp many times over 1 meter, i've recently done a few jobs where it's been up to the ceiling. If you render over a wall with rising damp it will come over the top, that's why a dpc is very important to control the damp.

Bloody rising damp it's worse than Ebola (not in death rates), I know of a guy who went on holiday come home and his house had been infected it cost him a fortune and he had just had his new central heating fitted and new windows, not to mention the new roof and gutters he was well pissed. Then another story I heard, don't know how true it is but another women's house has been infected a number of times but it seems to go in the drier days, the house never had it all summer then hey presto the snow and cold nights arrive and so does the rising damp it's sad she has had a number of professionals look at it and tried every cure but to no avail, she recons the house caught it off another plasterers clothes coz he was at another house with rising damp. He was working their 5 years ago floating a few window walls out with the browning so he could skim it in the same day, but to be fair he got rid of a lot of the spiders coz he plastered all the way down to the ground. :)

It would seem you don't understand rising damp or you think it's a myth. Depending how many surveys you carry out looking for dampness depends on your findings and opinion, i'm instructed to find the cause of dampness and my opinion based on facts using the necessary specialist equipment. I would say that I probably see more than most and also get involved in complex jobs that have had poor previous works and clients that have been given poor advice.

I also appreciate peoples frustration when they have been told that they need a new dpc and re-plastering when all they have is a blocked cavity or high ground level. There will always be the good guys and the bad guys in any trade unfortunately.

I dont under stand rising damp your right i don't understand how water can travel 3 foot up a wall but I maybe wrong so if you could explain rising damp that would help cheers Oh Pics are always helpful :)

haha this is comical.

Rising damp will only rise to a maximum of 900mm to 1200mm anything above that then its penetrating ingress.

I have never heard for people injecting about the DPC level, its capillary action that causes rising damp.

Maybe your right someone is pissing in the corner upstairs, give it a lick and see what it tastes like :RpS_scared:

Might be a leaking pipe, what I would do is expose above it, lift floor boards etc.
 
A damp patch is an easy fix my friend !......... Just get her to sleep on that side :RpS_thumbup:
 
Just shrug your shoulders blame it on a plumber and move on to the next job, failing that if its your house sell up and move somewhere warmer

Sorry to burst your bubble.
I have a laboratory for sample analysis. Salt testing using dilute nitric acid, silver nitrate, dilute sulphuric acid, concentrate sulphuric acid and iron sulphate.
